What is Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture?

Facial Rejuvenation, also known as acupuncture facelift, is a Chinese cosmetic technique that was first recorded being used by the Sung Dynasty (960 – 1279 A.D.). It is a cosmetic acupuncture that was done on empresses and concubines. The Chinese said it would improve circulation and stimulate the body's “natural anti-aging powers”. In Chinese it is called "Me Rong Zhen" and today it is used as a non-surgical method to treat wrinkles and smoothes the skin. A study done by the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture showed that out of 300 people who had undergone facial rejuvenation acupuncture, 270 showed signs of decreased facial wrinkling after one course of treatment.

Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is a simple process. Thin needles are strategically placed on the face in areas where the acupuncturist is trying to stimulate blood circulation and the creation of collagen. Sometimes electrically enthused needles are used to improve the tone and shape of facial muscles and skin elasticity. The production of collagen is directly correlated with reducing the amount and appearance of facial wrinkles.

Variables such as fitness, diet, and healthy lifestyle alter the effectiveness on an individual basis. But in general, you will notice improvements after six to eight sessions. One session will normally take approximately 60 minutes and 10 to 12 sessions over the course of 5-10 weeks is considered a complete course of treatment.

Maritza Kerekes is a Licensed Psychologist and acupuncturist. She is certified in facial rejuvenation acupuncture and hopes to one day own a wellness and acupuncture spa that focuses on integrating mind, body, and spirit therapy with psychotherapy, Chinese medicine, and acupuncture.

Three Strength Training Tips For Women

Strength training is very important and should be a regular part of your workout routine. Strength training strengthens your bones, builds muscle mass, and helps you maintain a healthy weight because forces your body to burn more calories when you are doing everyday activities. Nevertheless, it is sometimes hard to motivate yourself to do weight training. Here are three weight and strength training tips for women.
Make sure that you are doing enough sets, with enough repetitions, at an appropriate weight.  One set is better than nothing but it won't do much for your body. You ideally want to be doing two or three sets of 10 to 15 repetitions. Make sure that you are heavy enough weights so that you feel fatigued afterward but not in pain. Increase the weight of the weights your lifting every few weeks to maximize your strength training.

Try and avoid machines that are only working out one specific muscle. You should be working out a few muscles at a time when doing weight training because your muscles are connected like a web. Muscles should be working together, not in isolation from each other. If you focus on one specific muscle, you are ignoring all the little muscles that need larger ones to workout.

Women need not be afraid of bulking up like men. Men have higher testosterone levels, which is what makes it easier for men to bulk, compared to women. Because women have much lower testosterone levels, they are less likely to bulk up. Women are often wary of weight training out of fear that they will bulk up. There is no reason to fear this.

Maritza Kerekes is a licensed acupuncturist and psychologist. She works out regularly, and weight training is an important part of her routine. She is passionate about women's health and wellness.

Why is Strengthening Your Core Important?

A strong and healthy core may make you look great on the beach, but in reality a strong core is essential to a healthy body. A strong core isn’t just about strong abdominal muscles; it is about strengthening the center of your body. A healthy and strong core is equal to a healthy and strong body. Here are three why reasons why having a strong core is important.

Maritza Kerekes

  • A strong core means fewer injuries. Having a strong core increases your stability and strengthens the area around our spine. Your overall fitness improves with a strong core because most of your movement begins at the center of your body and moves outward. The better shape you are in, the less likely you are to be prone to injuries.
  • A strong core protects your central nervous system and internal organs. Your body’s largest and most important veins and arteries are based on your core. A strong core will protect those vital extremities. A strong core also protects and stabilizes your spine. Your spine is incredibly important, but it easily absorbs pressure if your core isn't strong and stable. It isn't healthy for your spine to have too much pressure.
  • Building a strong core is good for your back because balances out the workload that your back muscles have to do. If you have a weak core, your back muscles have to over compensate, and therefore likely stronger than your abdominal muscles. This creates uncomfortable back pain. A strong core alleviates the work your back muscles have to do, thus getting rid of any back pain that you may experience.
